Shallotte responded to a 10-7 loss to Hope Mills in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at West Brunswick’s Mike Alderson Field to down the Rockfish, 12-3, and split 7-inning games in Old North State League baseball.
The Shallywags are 6-4 going into a home game with Sandhills on Friday at 7 p.m.
“We hurt ourselves early with walks, hit batters, errors,” said Shallotte coach James Rice. “Once we got settled down, Aidan McBride came in and stopped the bleeding. We fought hard until the end but just ran out of time with it being a 7-inning doubleheader.
“We bounced back in game two and took the momentum from the end of game one and ran with it. Throughout both games, we hurt ourselves which was a point of emphasis with the guys.
“When we play clean baseball, we are very tough to beat so we have to win the freebie war, limit damage and keep taking advantage of when other teams are making mistakes.”
The Wags issued six walks and hit three batters in the first game while Hope Mills allowed just three walks. The numbers improved in the nightcap as Shallotte yielded three walks and hit two batters while the Fish gave up nine walks and plunked a pair.
Payton Hankins had a 2-run single and Angel Garrido had an RBI single in a 4-run second inning that gave Shallotte a 5-2 lead in the second game. Two walks with the bases loaded and a missed fly ball contributed to a 5-run fourth for the Wags.
Carter Navin got the win in game two. He went five innings, allowing five hit with three runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out three. Chapel Conway and Brent Avery each pitched a scoreless inning.
Shallotte had a 9-7 lead in hits in the second game. Cody Crafton and Garrido each had two hits and an RBI. Branton Jernigan and Hankins each had a hit and two RBIs. Trey Pierce had a hit and scored two runs.
Hope Mills (3-10) led 10-4 through three innings in the first game.
Ryan Yaroshuk had two hits and two RBIs for Shallotte in the afternoon contest, which was rescheduled after a rainout on Friday, June 13.
