West Brunswick used big plays to take a 35-6 victory over visiting West Johnston in the first round of the NCHSAA 6-A football playoffs on Friday night.

The Trojans (7-4) scored on a 28-yard pass from Josiah Borton to Jude Surigao on their first possession with 6:43 left in the first quarter and led the rest of the way.

A 20-yard pick six by Isaac Clarida pushed the advantage to 14-0 with 9:14 left in the half.

Borton connected with K’Veon Griffin for a 34-yard TD on a fourth down with 56.3 seconds left in the half for a 21-0 lead.

Griffin gave the hosts another scoring opportunity with a 65-yard interception return to the West Johnston 25 but a holding call moved West out of field goal range and a pass was incomplete in the end zone as the first half closed.

West Johnston (4-7) scored after a high punt snap provided an opportunity deep in Trojan territory.

Jaquell Davis had a 35-yard gain to set up his 5-yard scoring run with 2:11 left in the third quarter for a 28-6 West lead.

Griffin scored his second TD on a 12-yard end around with 4:55 remaining in the game and Maddie Richardson kicked her fifth extra point.

West advances to a second-round game at Middle Creek (7-2) on Friday at 7 p.m.
