Trojans take down Laney, 21-16, in first conference game

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

The resounding thud emanating from 6-A West Brunswick on Friday night was a 21-16 Trojans win over 8-A Laney in the first Carolina Coastal Conference varsity football game for both programs.

West chimed in with its victory bell after improving to 4-1 this season with its fifth straight win at home over two years.

The Trojans struck first on their second possession as K’Veon Griffin scored on a 38-yard pass play from Josiah Borton with Maddie Richardson adding the extra point for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Laney (2-3) kicked a 29-yard field goal to close within 7-3 with 9:04 left in the first half. The Bucs missed a 34-yard field goal attempt as the half expired.

West took a 14-3 lead with 8:12 left in the third by converting a 4th-and-goal at Laney’s 1-yard line on the fourth straight keeper by Borton. Richardson kicked the extra point.

Laney pulled within 14-10 with 10:34 to play on a 3-yard rushing TD after a lengthy punt return.

West restored some breathing room on a 55-yard pick six by Israel Saunders for a 21-10 lead with 8:24 left.

The Trojans quickly created another turnover with an interception by JaQuell Davis.

Laney scored on a 19-yard pass with 1.8 seconds left. The 2-point attempt failed.

West was dealt a 45-14 loss at Laney last year.

The Trojans play at Hoggard next Friday night.
