Update: West Brunswick will resume its game at Laney on Monday at 6 p.m. The score was tied at 7 after the first quarter when the contest was postponed on Friday night due to weather.

West Brunswick plays its first Carolina Coast Conference contest in football at Laney tonight at 7 p.m.

Both teams are 1-3 against challenging schedules.

The Trojans’ losses are by a total of five points, including two in overtime. The combined record of the teams that have wins over West is 10-2.

The Buccaneers have defeats from Garner, Greenville Rose and Northside Jacksonville by a total of 63 points. Those teams have a combined mark of 11-1.

Laney’s 28-7 loss to Northside at home on Tuesday was the same score as West’s defeat from the Monarchs (4-0) in the Bash at the Beach scrimmage on August 14.

Trojans coach Aaron Powell expects his team to be close to full strength from injuries. Defensive end Israel Saunders saw some action last week in a 22-21 overtime loss at South Columbus. Saunders had a knee injury last year that required surgery.

West trailed 14-0 at halftime at South Columbus and was down, 18-0, in an eventual 39-36 loss at Whiteville.

“The biggest thing is getting a good start and maintaining focus throughout the game,” said Powell, who also serves as defensive coordinator. “We need to make the right reads and finish tackles.”

The Trojans have capable skill personnel that have produced an average of 398.8 total yards per game under offensive coordinator Scott Loosemore.

That group includes quarterback Josiah Borton, running back Motashi Lance, running back Marzell Stanley and receiver Eden Romero.
