West Brunswick hopes to end a 3-game losing streak at winless Topsail in a Carolina Coastal Conference varsity football game on Friday night at 7 p.m.
West is 4-1 at home this season, 0-3 on the road.
There is good news and bad news for the Trojans as far as injuries.
Defensive end stalwart Tony Sanchez had surgery this week for a fractured fibula sustained last week in a 28-14 home loss to New Hanover and will not play any more in his senior season.
Safety/wide receiver K’Veon Griffin is expected to return after going out in a 42-24 setback at North Brunswick on Oct. 3.
West coach Shane Handy said defensive back/receiver Nick Brown may be available.
The Trojan (4-4, 1-3) CCC) make the 60-mile trip to take on the Pirates after a team meal at 2 p.m.
“Great team tackling will be important,” Handy said. “Taking care of the football on offense, making sure we’re consistent there.
“We think we’ve got to be balanced and be able to move the football on the ground for sure, but also be able to throw it around a little bit.
“Our key is we need to be able to run the football, for sure.”
West is averaging 157.4 yards per game rushing and 101.8 yards passing.
Topsail is 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
“We’ve got to play consistent,” Handy said. “Be consistent, and the special teams also, I think it’s huge for us to get a great start and play good for four quarters.
“Obviously they’re starving for a win and we need one too. So, obviously, it’s a conference battle. With two games left we need to finish strong.”
