West Brunswick’s offense and defense were stellar in a 54-15 varsity football win over visiting South Columbus on Friday night.
Special teams will get some work before the 6-A Trojans (3-1) start their Carolina Coastal Conference schedule against visiting 8-A Laney (2-2) on Friday night.
Josiah Borton threw for four touchdowns and ran for another after missing a 24-12 setback the previous week at North Myrtle Beach with an upper body injury.
“Definitely a lot better performance,” said Trojans coach Shane Handy. “A lot more excitement, for sure.”
JaQuell Davis had three TD runs for West including a 2-yard carry with 5:19 left in the first quarter that put West ahead to stay.
K’Veon Griffin snared scoring passes of 30 and 39 yards, the second in a 4th-and-26 situation, for a 20-0 lead. Carmine Sleavensky kicked the first two extra points. Borton scored on a 7-yard keeper with 8:01 left in the half for a 26-0 lead.
Jaylan Hubbard returned a line drive kick on the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a Stallions score.
Jude Surigao scored on a 37-yard pass play for a 34-7 lead on a 2-point catch by Griffin.
Nick Graham had a 30-yard TD catch with 2:24 left in the third quarter and Maddie Richrdson added the conversion kick.
Davis scored from a yard out and Sleavensky added the extra point with 7:47 left in the third to create a running clock situation.
The Stallions scored on a short pass, got a 2-point pass conversion and attempted an onside kick that Surigao returned to the South Columbus 5. Davis ran it in from the 5 to complete the scoring.
“We’re still missing one offensive lineman (Christian Mendoza) that will help us a ton,” Handy said. “We could have played him, but he had a bad ankle, high ankle sprain. We were just kind of holding off on him. We decided not to use him. Let him have one more week to get totally better. He’s a huge part of what we do. He’ll really help us.
“We were excited about the way the defense played, the way the offense played, of course.”
Handy will be working on correcting three missed extra point kicks and other factors this week.
“We’ve got to have a tough week of practice because Laney’s obviously a pretty good football team,” Handy said. “They’re a big school and they’re going to have people play one way and that kind of stuff.
“We’ve got to lock in and get after it this week.”

K’Veon Griffin hangs on in the process of completing the catch.
