West Brunswick scored on a variety of big plays and moved to 2-0 with a 38-21 win over visiting Whiteville on Friday night.
West had not beaten the Wolfpack since 2019.
The Trojans went ahead to stay at 19-14 with 1:58 left in the third quarter.
A punt return for a score by K’Veon Griffin extended the lead to 26-14. The Wolfpack scored on a 4th-and-goal from the 2-yard line to pull within 26-21. JaQuell Davis had a 78-yard touchdown run on a 3rd-and-9 for a 32-21 lead with 2:32 to go.
Trey Evans had a 106-yard pick six for his second interception in the fourth quarter.
Jude Surigao opened the second half with a scoring reception that covered 80 yards.
“That was a great halftime adjustment,” said West coach Shane Handy. “They’re playing man to man. They’re blitzing and playing man. We run the mesh, cross the middle, cross them up and try to obviously mix up the man-to-man stuff and he popped open pretty good. Took it to the house.”
Whiteville (1-1) had its last lead at 14-13.
‘They are a good team,” Handy said. “I think they do a good job coaching and of course they’ve got some good players and do a good job.
“I felt like our guys really responded and they tried to take away a few things from us.We had to adjust and thought the kids did a good job adjusting. When we kind of got things rolling, we went back to some stuff that we wanted to do in the beginning.
“The kids really responded to that too. Of course, special teams always helps when you get a special teams touchdown. That’s for sure.”
Female kicker Maddie Richardson booted two extra points for the Trojans.
“JaQuell and Marzell (Stanley) both ran the ball well,” Handy said. “Marzell ended up blocking really well in that two-back formation that we run. And so JaQuell was kind of hot, so we figured we’d just keep giving it to him.
“He did a great job. The offensive line, got on their blocks and stayed on them pretty well and gave him some opportunities to break a few runs.”
Davis had 184 yards on 15 carries.
West plays on Friday at North Myrtle Beach (1-). Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
“North Myrtle Beach will be a good test,” Handy said. “We’re excited. We’re right across the border from each other, so this has become a little bit of a rivalry.
“We’re excited about playing those guys.”
